Perl Developer - New Zealand - Wellington

Catalyst IT is New Zealand's leading open source development company and has staff worldwide, with the majority (including this role) based in Wellington. We specialize in open source software and web applications, and are a leader in the NZ open source community. We believe that open source, open data and an open business model should and can be the preferred choice.

We are looking for a skilled software developer who is either proficient in – or keen to learn – Perl to join our Electoral Commission team. Your primary focus will be on working as part of an experienced team to develop features in the Electoral Roll Management system. You will work with the team on different areas of the application to meet customer requirements. A commitment to collaborative problem solving, sophisticated design, and quality product is important.

Your day-to-day responsibilities will be to develop new and existing features, translate requirements and wireframes into high quality code and to maintain and extend the extensive suite of regression tests. You’ll also do code reviews of your colleagues’ contributions and help to scope and assess new work.

We’re looking for someone enthusiastic about the opportunity to work with and extend a large existing code base. You should be proficient in modern software development principles and keen to learn and share your experience. You will have the ability to understand business requirements and translate them into technical requirements, as well as familiarity with source code management.

Other things that will make your application stand out are listed below, but these are preferences and not requirements so please don’t think of this as a checklist:
• Experience with modern Perl development
• Experience with configuration management, especially Puppet
• Good working knowledge of HTML/CSS/Javascript
• Experience with Git, or another modern source code management tool
