Intermediate JavaScript Developer - New Zealand - Wellington

Catalyst IT are looking for an Intermediate Front End JavaScript Developer to join our in-house UX/Design team in our Wellington office. We believe that open source, open data and an open business model should and can be the preferred choice. We are New Zealand's leading open source development company and have staff worldwide, with the majority based in Wellington. We specialize in open source software and web applications, and are a leader in the NZ open source community.

We are looking for a great JavaScript developer who is proficient with React. Your primary focus will be on developing user interface components and implementing them following well-known React workflows (such as Redux or Flux). You will ensure that these components and the overall application are robust and easy to maintain. You will coordinate with the rest of the team working on different layers of the infrastructure. Therefore, a commitment to collaborative problem solving, sophisticated design, and quality product is important.


  • Developing new user-facing features using modern JavaScript
  • Translating designs and wireframes into high quality code
  • Optimizing components for maximum performance across both web-capable devices and browsers
  • Code review of your colleagues’ contributions
  • Helping to scope and assess new work as part of an Agile team

Essential skills

You should have 2 - 5 years experience and a strong proficiency in modern JavaScript, as well as:

  • Thorough understanding of React.js and its core principles
  • Experience with popular React.js workflows (such as Redux or Flux)
  • Ability to understand business requirements and translate them into technical requirements
  • Familiarity with Git code versioning

Skills that will make you stand out

  • Experience with other modern JS frameworks such as Angular
  • Familiarity with RESTful API driven development
  • Experience with creating or adapting modern front-end build pipelines with tools such as Webpack
  • Knowledge of static typing libraries such as Flow or TypeScript
  • Experience with modern CSS techniques and CSS preprocessors like SASS
