Humanitarian Leadership Academy

Training that’s available anywhere

Humanitarian Leadership Academy (HLA) works to help people prepare for and respond to crises in their own countries. They work with the humanitarian sector and partners from the technology industry, private sector and universities to help communities become more resilient in the face of disaster.

Our solution

HLA needed to increase the reach of their vital training, making it accessible to as many people as possible. They chose Totara LMS, and asked Catalyst to help implement it.

Their solution is composed of two platforms which work together as a blended learning system – Kaya and Academy Centres.

Kaya is the main platform for delivering course content, while Academy Centres helps humanitarians build relationships with other organisations.

By using open source software, several elements of this solution were reused from another Catalyst project, enabling two non-profit organisations to benefit from the same technology.

Built to work in crisis zones

Areas of humanitarian crisis are often remote, isolated and have limited infrastructure. Kaya is built with these challenges in mind. Where slow and even dial-up internet is all that’s available, Kaya ensures download sizes are realistic.

Our global delivery network (CDN) ensures content is being mirrored and sent from the user’s closest server, eliminating geographic delay.

Kaya also makes use of our offline player technology, so courses can be completed offline. Results are automatically uploaded once good connectivity is restored.

Kaya works beautifully.
